Better Still

Down at the bottom of all things, the foundation stones of all reality, there are Three: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. From them we all live and move and have our being.

In the Scriptures the Lord showed us many, many reflections of His triune character. The songs of Better Still were written around a number of these reflections.

Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
Fountain of all blessing
Who do we desire the most?
The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost

Each one looks to glorify
Each one says “It is not I”
Giving praise eternally
Three in one, the Trinity

Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
Fountain of all blessing
Who do we desire the most?
The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost

Each the others' hand to raise
Each the others' deeds to praise
Bound in love, self-giving, free
The three in one, the Trinity

Father, Son, and Holy Ghost
Fountain of all blessing
Who do we desire the most?
The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost

A House for Me

© Jamie Soles Jul 13 2013

Sample

The world is a house, a three-story house
A house that is built on foundations
The blue sky above like a tent curtain
Covers the pillars that hold it in place
The waters above and the waters beneath
And the land in between where His creatures all sleep
God is building a house for me

The world is a house, a three-story house
He filled with His glorious creations
The sun and the moon and the stars fill the room
Where they’re governing over the earth
The fish in the sea and the birds in the air
And the man and the beasts of the field they all share
God is building a house for me
God is building a house for me

Jabal, Jubal, Tubal-cain, brothers, fathers, sons of Cain
From the town with Enoch’s name
Jabal, Jubal, Tubal-cain

Jabal was a sheik with tents and livestock
And if you like your steak on hoof in the cow lot
Jabal was the first, and if you have a thirst for this
What bliss! You’ve found your founding father!
Jabal, Jubal, Tubal-cain, brothers, fathers, sons of Cain
From the town with Enoch’s name
Jabal, Jubal, Tubal-cain

Jubal, he could play the lyre and pipe
And everyone today who finds delight
In music, music.…
The music makers father’s name
Was Jubal from the famous family.…
Jabal, Jubal, Tubal-cain, brothers, fathers, sons of Cain
From the town with Enoch’s name
Jabal, Jubal, Tubal-cain

Tubal-cain was strong, and scarred with burn marks
Instruments of bronze and iron
Were the things he liked the best,
and we have all been blessed
For many metal’s might and main
We tip our top to Tubal-Cain!
Jabal, Jubal, Tubal-cain, brothers, fathers, sons of Cain
From the town with Enoch’s name

Ham

(Gen 9:18–27)

Ham … what did you do?
Ham … third son of your father
Ham, why these words to bind your freedom?
Ham … you went into that tent
Ham … found your father uncovered
Ham, when you told your brothers outside …
Why, why, why?

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem
And let Canaan be his servant
May God enlarge Japheth,
and let him dwell in the tents of Shem
And let Canaan be his servant
The son of Ham will be a servant
Cursed be Canaan, a servant of servants
Shall he be to his brothers,
Oh, Ham.…

Ham … did he seem contemptible?
Ham … did he lack authority?
Ham, did you think the boys would join in your rebellion?
Oh Ham … did you see yourself as king?
Ham … did you reach to take the thing?
Ham … scamming power before your time …
It fits the crime.…

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem
And let Canaan be his servant
May God enlarge Japheth,
and let him dwell in the tents of Shem
And let Canaan be his servant
The son of Ham will be a servant
Cursed be Canaan, a servant of servants
Shall he be to his brothers,
Oh, Ham.…

In the Tabernacle

(Ex 39)
© Jamie Soles Sept 17 2010

Sample

What are the things that the King desires in the tabernacle, Moses?
Please tell us now, we’ll start the smelting fires
For the tabernacle, Moses

The Tent, its hooks and frames and bars, pillars, bases, utensils,
Coverings of tanned ram and other goat skins
And the veil of the screen, the ark of the testimony with its poles
In the tabernacle
Mercy seat, the table spread, bread of the Presence,
Lamp stands of pure gold with lamps all set just right;
And all its utensils, and oil for the light
In the tabernacle, Moses

What furnishings does the King desire in His tabernacle, Moses?
We’ll gather rings, wool, linen by the mile for the tabernacle, Moses.

Altar gold, anointing oil, and the fragrant incense,
Screen for the entrance of the tent, the bronze altar, its grating,
Its poles and its utensils in the tabernacle, Moses
Basin and its basin port, woven hangings for the court,
Its pillars, its bases and the screen for the gate
Of the court, its cords, its pegs and all utensils
In the tabernacle, Moses.

How would the King clothe His men, do tell, in the tabernacle, Moses?
Tell Bezalel, he’ll make them up so well for the tabernacle, Moses.

Ephod set with onyx stones, breast piece, chains of cords of gold
Robe made of blue with bells along the hem
And a coat, turban, cap, sash, “Holy to the Lord”
In the tabernacle, Moses

The Red and the Green

(Lev 14:33–45)
© Jamie Soles Mar 27 2009

Sample

Is there something the matter with the house?
Is it reddish and green like a leprous disease?
Call the priest, get your stuff out of this house;
He will clean, quarantine, if it be unclean
And wait for a week to see.…

Was there something the matter with the house?
When the priest came to see ’bout the red and the green
Was it deep? Was it spreading in the house?
Did he take out a wall and replaster it all
And wait for a week to…

See Jesus cleansing the temple not once, not twice,
Third time’s not as nice.…

Was there something the matter with the house?
Could the red and the green yet have spread, still be seen?
It’s unclean; now he’s tearing down the house
Not a stone will be left, it will be desolate
And dragged to a place unclean

Not one stone will be left on another
That will not be torn down

Priests

(Num 4)

Levi’s sons were three: Kohath, Gershom, and Merari
Fathers of the priests; temple servants, if you please
They carried all the stuff, the tabernacle and its service
In the desert wanderings

Kohath – he carried all the holy things
Gershon – he carried all the coverings
Merari – he carried all the bones
Until the cloud came down again.…

When the glory cloud stayed awhile at rest
They would serve and guard and protect
But when the cloud would rise, so would these three guys
They’d pack it up and wrap it up
And saddle up and there they go.…

Kohath – he carried all the holy things
Gershon – he carried all the coverings
Merari – he carried all the bones
Until the cloud came down again.…

Kohath – he carried all the holy things
Gershon – he carried all the coverings
Merari – he carried all the bones
Until the cloud came down again.…

Miriam

(Num 12)

Miriam, why so glum?
How’d you come to such a conclusion?
Aaron, please, why so cheesed over a Cushite woman?
Don’t you like your sister-in-law?
Or has something else got stuck in your craw?
You complain that she’s a foreigner,
But Moses is the bead that you draw.…

For the Lord has spoken though Moses, Moses
Moses, that’s all you ever hear.…
If you want the glory of Moses
Then like Moses, you’ll have to draw near.…

Miriam, time to come, Aaron too, to the tent of meeting
God will say, yay or nay, something to stop the bleeding.
Moses sees the form of the Lord,
You have said now more than you can afford.
He will make it black and white
She is black and now you’re white;
You are wrong and Moe is right with the Lord.…

For the Lord has spoken though Moses, Moses
Moses, that’s all you ever hear.…
If you want the glory of Moses
Then like Moses, you’ll have to draw near
For the Lord has spoken though Moses, Moses
Moses, that’s all you ever hear.…
If you want the glory of Moses
Then like Moses, you’ll have to draw near

Benjamin the Wolf

(Judges 20)
© Jamie Soles May 9 2013

Sample

Benjamin, evil men, show us Sodom once again
“Beloved of the Lord,” how you are falling.…
Just two generations in, fighting to defend your sin,
Benjamin the wolf, you are appalling.…
And Israel who faces you is worse
A nation under God, under a curse
The hand of God upon you both, a scourge.…
Hence this dirge.…

On the first day your fighting went so well
On the second day many thousand of them fell
On the third day, oh, that third day.…
Israel died and rose again.…
On the first day your fighting went so well
On the second day many thousand of them fell
On the third day, oh, that third day.…
Israel died and rose again, and Benjamin was slain
Benjamin was slain, the wolf has been slain
Oh Lord, in our day, do it again.

Mighty Men

(2 Sam 23:8–17)
© Jamie Soles Mar 26 2010

Sample

Mighty men are serving David, thirty seven of the best
If you try to fight with Israel, these will never let you rest

Josheb-basshebeth the Tachemonite is unbeatable with a spear
For eight hundred died, they fell when he plied his point
Now the enemies fear.…

Eleazar son of Dodo, whom the Philistines surrounded in a field
Struck them down, struck them down,
till his hand clung to his sword
And victory was given by the Lord

Mighty men are serving David, thirty seven of the best
If you try to fight with Israel, these will never let you rest

Shammah son of Agee the Hararite
staked his life in a garden of beans
All his friends ran away, but he stayed and he played
Filled the garden with Philistines

Three together, harvest weather,
drew some water from the well at Bethlehem
For their king, for their lord,
all their valour was poured on the land
And Israel did prosper in their hand

Mighty men are serving David, thirty seven of the best
If you try to fight with Israel, these will never let you rest

Mighty men are serving Jesus, many, many of the best
If you try to fight with Jesus, He will never let you rest
He will never let you rest

Better Still

Two are better than one
For they have a good reward for their toil
If your power is done
You are not alone, for the other will come
But woe to him who falls alone
And has no-one to bring him home
To lift him up, to keep him warm
To be his shelter from the storm
But better still is a threefold cord

Two are better than one
For they have a good reward for their toil
If your power is done
You are not alone, for the other will come
But woe to him who falls alone
And has no-one to bring him home
To lift him up, to keep him warm
To be his shelter from the storm
But better still is a threefold cord

Third Day

I’ve been down here three days and nights
At the roots of the mountains deep
The weeds were wrapped around my head
But my precious life You keep
Shall I look again on Your holy place?
Can You rescue me from my deep disgrace?
Will I stay this way or will I rise on the third day?

I called out to the Lord in my distress and he answered me
Out of the belly of Sheol I cried
And You heard my voice, You heard my plea
For You cast me in the deep, to the heart of the sea
All Your floods and waves and billows, they rolled over me
Was I driven away where You couldn’t see till the third day?

All my vows I will pay, when I see another day
Won’t You raise me up from this grave?
Don’t leave me here; I want to rise on the third day
Get me out of here! I’ve got to rise …
On the third day

Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego

Shadrach, Meshach, Abed-nego
Everybody else is bowing low
Not you … you will not sin, not you … to save your skin
Shadrach, Meshach, Abed-nego
When trouble comes, to the Lord you go
And you … when the music plays for you
And you see the blaze you say …

We believe the Lord will save us from you
Even if He won’t, be it known that we would rather die
Than serve your idle dreams and lying schemes

Shadrach, Meshach, Abed-nego
From the court to the furnace, not far to go
Fall down in the fiery furnace
Bound, but it made no difference
Four men stood in the open flame
The Lord and the three who knew His name
The three who believed His promise good
Who believed that Jesus could … saying.…

We believe the Lord will save us from you
Even if He won’t, be it known that we would rather die
Than serve your idle dreams and lying schemes
La la la la la, la la la la, la la la la la
Be it known that we would rather die
Than serve your idle dreams and lying schemes

Israel, When You Were Young

© Jamie Soles Apr 27 2012

Sample

Israel, when you were young
When you came up out of Egypt
You had priests to tell you what to do
Your job was to believe them and obey
Believe and obey, this was the way, do what they say

Israel, you grew up tall
You became a king, a leader
And you needed to be wise
Your job was to deliver and to die, give your life,
You were to serve, lay down and die
Israel — Israel — Israel

Israel, your hair grew grey
And your words became a power
When you spoke the world would change
Your prophet’s mantle towered o’er the earth
Death to birth, calling forth the world’s Messiah

And when you died you came alive in Christ.

Triple Games

Peter, James, and John … good company for God the Son
Peter, John, and James … the Spirit gave their names
James and John and Peter … the Father’s a repeater
And He loves these triple games, these games with triple names
The Father, Son, and Spirit … listen, can you hear it?
The Father, Spirit, Son … the holy Three in One
The Spirit, Son, and Father
Delight to show another sign of how the world goes on
Now with Peter, James, and John
Peter, James, and John.

Now Abide

(1 Cor 13:8–13)
© Jamie Soles May 8 1997

Sample

Oh Lord of all the earth, we were made for bearing fruit
You have put us in Your garden and have caused us to take root
You have granted us to know You desire for us to grow
To the measure of a man, to the fullness of the Son of Man

You have given many gifts; some are greater some are less
Some were destined from the start to outlive their usefulness
For the prophecies will fail, and the tongues will surely cease
But the knowledge of the Lord, it will certainly increase
Till Your children come of age.…

Now abides faith till it turns to sight
Now survives faith and hope till we see You with our eyes
Now remains faith, hope, and love, but love will last forever
Let us grow up into love, for the greatest of these is love

Now abides faith till it turns to sight
Now survives faith and hope, till we see You with our eyes
Now remains faith, hope, and love, but love will last forever
Let us grow up into love, for the greatest of these is love

Now abides faith till it turns to sight
Now survives faith and hope, till we see You with our eyes
Now remains faith, hope, and love, but love will last forever
Let us grow up into love, for the greatest of these is love
